In this bachelor thesis assumptions and phenomena of the current state of discussion were examined. To verify the findings practically, both leading media – the book and its digital counterpart displayed on a tablet – were subjected to a comparison, by extracting their specifications and restage them incisively and aesthetically…

Part II Subsequent, it was verified which medium can fulfill certain requirements better.

The multimedia publication is predestined to be nonlinear through its digital options: Information can be quickly linked to each other, there is neither a beginning nor end, pieces of information are »without place« and thus available at any time at any place. The book links form and content more appropriate: The physical and sensual presence of the book, the materiality, the ideal connection to the historical tradition of the book as a source of culture is self-evident and can at best be generated digitally through artifacts.

This type is a serif display font with a playfull character and a high-contrasted charm – that makes the font applicable onto various situations.

bonjour/m was published in the »Typodarium 2014«.

Amnetsy Aktion

Illustrations for front page and centerfold for the Amnesty International newsreport »Amnesty Aktion« about arms trade.

This work won the tdc Award 2012.

This editorial project is defined through the terms of the input, output and transfer characteristics of a skype-conversation of three persons over almost 2 years. An invisible archive was transferred into a new format and story by adding pictures and reorganizing, editing, designing and transforming the existing data. The life of three persons and their whereabouts, people they’ve met with and places they’ve stayed at are so captured in 247 pages.

Bondye Bon

PrÉtexte The publishing house is designed as a neutral observer, as an agent spying through a newspaper. For the collection »The great disasters« ten front pages were created as a series.

Bondye Bon A book about the earthquake in Haiti in 2012, supported by expressive illustrations. The book presents general information about Haiti (1st Chapter), illustrated sequences of the destruction (2nd Chapter) and compares traditionally exerted voodoo practices, which are blamed for the quake in some theories, with scientific explanations (3rd Chapter).

With the background of historical contradictions and inconsistencies this »documentary view« emerges – stills of Staufer nobility. The focus isn’t on the rectification of traditional »facts«, but on the sometimes quite strange inconsistencies. The gray areas. These are highlighted humorously and polemically, sometimes exaggerated through sarcasm.

The project was created as a collaboration with the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd in the context of its 850th anniversary.

ABOUT Magazine

This project is planned as a quarterly published monothematic magazine. This edition is about wandering, being abroad, moving after a short stay… . All text content is self edited, as well as the picture series.

Made at ECAL in spring 2012 with Mathieu Daudelin.

Redesign of a book about the beginning of multi-storey buildings in Germany. The design applies to the clear comparison of pictures and the corresponding text, by separating both levels strictly.

My Thing

A Free poster I made after being confronted with a lot of difficulties after finishing my studies, ending up beeing disenchanted – using a line from Flume’s »On Top«.

Catch me if you can

This poster shows an abstract information graphic about the movie »Catch me if you can«. It tells the story of Frank W. Abagnale and Carl Hanratty, the FBI agent who is tracking down Frank, by following three paths: the emotional relationship between both, the physical closeness every time Frank almost get’s caught and Frank’s state of mind.

Music visual for Shlohmo’s »Hot Boxing The Cockpit« realised using 3D and motion tracking and transferring the glitch sound to the visual level.

Free poster, referring to how sickening stress can be and how stupid one can become because of it, using a line from Blu & Exil’s »Dancing In The Rain«.

Event calendar I + II

Monthly event posters designed focusing on typographic details and arrangement.

Event calendar I The grey composition is rationed rhythmical by months, these are bleed-off and continuing on the back side of the calendar, which works as a poster as well as a folded flyer.

Event calendar II The red ribbon is used as a the central theme or leitmotif, picking up a german saying. The ribbon is recurring every month, meandering endlessly.

»Etty« – Barbouze de chez Fior

The Video clip for the group Barbouze de chez Fior is showing four plot lines. Each line starts smooth and happy, but gets weird and disturbed over time – picking up the mood of the song.

Die Ursonate

Event poster for a fake recital of Kurt Schwitter’s »Sonate in Urlauten« by Arne Dechow.

By tessellating the lyrics of the Ursonate, building a dadaistic ornament, a strong reference to the Dada-Art of Kurt Schwitters, who worked a lot with newspaper collages, is generated. Adding the infos for the event as a second layer through bold typography makes a modern effect and represents the present.

Der Steppenwolf

This poster was made in context of the workshop »Creative Coding: Understanding Texts« by Stephan Thiel, about how to analyse a text through coding with »Processing«. Doing so it was possible to extract characteristics in visuals, in which we show the inner conflict of protagonist Harry Haller aka. »der Steppenwolf«.

Miriam Bröckel — Grafik Design
My great passion lays in rhythm and grids and details in type – micro and macro. I love designing rules as much as I love breaking them. I believe in the controllability of chaos through systematization – taking also the irrational and subversive into account and the content as its legitimation.

I studied graphic design at the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd, in southern Germany, and the Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne/ECAL, in Switzerland. Beside my studies I made an internship at Fons Hickmann m23 in autumn/winter 2012 in Berlin.

In July 2013 I graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Design at the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd. In my Thesis I worked together with two friends, Beppo Albrecht and Julian Hölzer, on how reading is going to change and develop in the future and how it differs to reading books. Currently I work for AWR Anzinger Wüschner Rasp in Munich.
